How to Rank Your Dental Practice in the Google Map Pack

The three practices shown on the map get most of the clicks for "dentist near me". Here is what Google says it weighs, what local search experts rank highest in 2026, and the order we fix things in for dental practices.

Short answer: Google ranks dental practices in the map pack on relevance, distance and prominence. To move up, choose the most accurate primary category, complete every part of your Business Profile, earn a steady flow of genuine reviews, give each location its own page on your website, and keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere. You cannot pay Google for a better map ranking.

Key takeaways
  • Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that review count and score factor into ranking.
  • In Whitespark's 2026 survey of local search experts, primary Business Profile category ranked as the top map pack factor, ahead of distance to the searcher.
  • Your business name must be your real-world name. Adding keywords such as "Best Dentist Chicago" breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
  • You rank best close to your office. Paid search is how you reach patients further out.

How does Google decide which dentists show in the map pack?

Google's own help page names three factors.1

Relevancehow well your profile matches the search. Categories, services and description drive it.
Distancehow far your office is from the searcher, or from the place named in the search.
Prominencehow well known you are: reviews, links, articles and directories across the web.

Google also states that review count and review score factor into local ranking, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better position.1 Everything below works on relevance and prominence, because distance is fixed by where your office stands.

What should you fix first on your Google Business Profile?

  1. Primary category.Pick the category that best describes the practice as a whole: Dentist, Cosmetic Dentist, Pediatric Dentist, Orthodontist, Periodontist and so on. Experts in Whitespark's 2026 survey ranked primary category as the most important map pack factor.3
  2. Secondary categories.Add the others that genuinely apply, such as Emergency Dental Service or Dental Implants Periodontist. Do not add categories for services you only offer occasionally.
  3. Services.List each treatment you want patients to find, with a one-line description in plain language.
  4. Hours, including holidays.Keep them accurate, and add special hours before every holiday so you do not show as open when the phones are off.
  5. Appointment link and phone.Link to online booking or your new-patient page, and use a tracked number with your main office number as the additional phone.
  6. Photos.Your real team, rooms, equipment and building exterior. Patients use the exterior shot to find the door.
  7. Description.Write who you treat, what you offer and the areas you serve, in your own words. Keep it factual.

Your Business Profile name must match your real-world name as shown on your signage and letterhead.2 "Smith Family Dental" is fine. "Smith Family Dental | Best Implant Dentist Near Me" is a guideline violation that competitors can report.

How much do reviews matter for map rankings?

A lot, and recency matters as well as total count. A practice with 300 reviews and none in the last six months can lose ground to one with 120 that adds a few every week. The goal is a steady flow from every patient you see, not a one-off campaign.

Google prohibits incentives for reviews and asking only happy patients to leave them.4 Our guide to getting more Google reviews for a dental practice covers a compliant system, HIPAA-safe replies and what to do about a bad review.

What does your website need to support map rankings?

  • One page per location with the exact name, address and phone number from the profile, hours, an embedded map, parking or transit notes and the services offered there.
  • One page per major service, written for patients, so Google can connect your profile to searches such as "dental implants" or "emergency dentist".
  • Dentist structured data on the location page, matching the visible details.
  • The profile's website link pointing to the location page, not the homepage, if you have more than one office.
  • A fast mobile page, because most map clicks come from phones. See our dental website conversion checklist.

Do directory listings still matter?

They matter less than they did, but inconsistent details still confuse Google and patients. Check that your name, address and phone match on Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, Healthgrades, Zocdoc if you use it, and the provider directories of the insurance plans you accept. Fix old addresses first if you have ever moved.

Should each dentist have their own Google listing?

Google allows public-facing practitioners such as dentists to have their own listing alongside the practice listing.2 In a multi-dentist practice this can help patients searching for a dentist by name. The risk is that a practitioner listing outranks the practice listing and splits reviews. If you use them, give each a different category from the practice and point them to that dentist's bio page.

What routine keeps a dental practice ranking?

How oftenTask
DailyAsk every patient for a review at checkout, using a text link
WeeklyReply to new reviews; post an update or offer; add a few real photos
MonthlyCheck calls, direction requests and website clicks in the profile's performance report; check rankings for your top five searches
QuarterlyReview categories, services and description; check directory listings; update holiday hours

What if you want patients from further away?

Map rankings fall off with distance, and no amount of optimization will make a practice rank on the far side of a large city. To reach patients further out, use location pages for genuine nearby service areas and paid search with location targeting. Our Google Ads campaign structure guide shows how to set the radius and location options. For the full service, see dental SEO.
