How Dentists Show Up in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews

Patients now ask AI assistants which dentist to see. There is no secret AI ranking trick, but there is a clear pattern in which practices get named. This guide covers what the assistants draw on, what Google itself says, and a checklist you can work through in an afternoon.

Short answer: AI assistants recommend dental practices they can find, understand and trust. That means a complete Google Business Profile, consistent details on every major listing, a website that states your services, insurance, hours and dentists in plain text, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and mentions on other sites. Google says no special optimization or schema is needed for its AI features; the same fundamentals that win local search win AI answers.

Key takeaways
  • Google states there are no additional requirements and no special schema.org markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • Assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity answer local questions by searching the web, so your listings, reviews and pages are what they read.
  • Consistency matters: if your hours, address or services differ across sites, an assistant may skip you or repeat the wrong details.
  • Test it yourself: ask the assistants the questions your patients ask, every month, and record who gets named.

How do AI assistants decide which dentist to recommend?

When a patient asks "Who is a good implant dentist near me?", the assistant does not consult a secret list. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Google's core search systems,1 so they lean on the same signals as regular and local search. Assistants such as ChatGPT search the web for the question and summarize what they find: business listings, review sites, practice websites, local news and directories.

In our own testing for dental practices, the practices that get named share three traits: a well-reviewed and complete Business Profile, a website that answers the specific question in plain text, and mentions on other trustworthy sites. Practices missing any of the three are named far less often.

What does Google say about optimizing for AI Overviews?

No extrasno additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode
No AI schemano special schema.org structured data is required for AI features
Match the pagestructured data you do use should match the text people can see

That guidance comes from Google's own page on AI features.1 Google also recommends keeping important content in text form rather than only in images or video, and verifying your site in Search Console so technical problems surface quickly.

Be wary of anyone selling a guaranteed "ChatGPT ranking". No vendor controls what an assistant says. What you can control is whether the facts about your practice are complete, consistent and easy to find.

What should a dental practice do to show up in AI answers?

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile.Accurate primary category, every service, hours including holidays, photos, booking link. Our map pack guide walks through each field.
  2. Make your details identical everywhere.Name, address, phone, hours and website on Google, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, Healthgrades and insurance directories. Not every assistant relies on Google.
  3. State the facts in plain text on your website.Services, which insurance you accept, whether you see new patients, emergency availability, languages spoken, your dentists' names and training. If it is only in a PDF or an image, assume an assistant cannot read it.
  4. Answer real patient questions on service pages."How much do implants cost here?", "Do you treat anxious patients?", "Can I get in this week?" Short, direct answers near the top of the page are easy for any system to quote.
  5. Keep a steady flow of genuine reviews.Ask every patient. Do not tell them what to write; Google prohibits requesting specific content. Our reviews guide covers a compliant system.
  6. Earn mentions on other sites.Local news, community sponsorships, dental society directories and university or hospital affiliations all give assistants independent confirmation that you exist and are well regarded.
  7. Do not block the crawlers you want to be read by.Check your robots.txt. For example, OpenAI documents a separate crawler, OAI-SearchBot, used to surface sites in ChatGPT search.2
  8. Use structured data that matches the page.Dentist or LocalBusiness markup on location pages and FAQ markup where you show FAQs. It will not force an AI mention, but it removes ambiguity.

Do you need an llms.txt file or an AI facts page?

Neither is required by Google for its AI features. A short facts page that states your services, locations, hours, insurance and policies in plain sentences can still help any system, and any patient, find the right answer quickly. It costs little to maintain if you keep it accurate. We publish one ourselves at /ai-info as an example. An llms.txt file is optional; treat it as a low-cost extra, not a ranking factor.

How do you check whether AI assistants recommend your practice?

Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (for an AI Overview) the questions your patients ask, and record which practices are named and what is said about yours:

  • Best dentist in [your neighborhood or town]
  • Dentist near [landmark] that takes [your most common insurance]
  • Emergency dentist open Saturday in [city]
  • Who does dental implants in [city], and roughly how much do they cost?
  • Is [your practice name] a good dentist?

Check the last one closely. If an assistant gives wrong hours, an old address or outdated services, find where that information comes from and fix it at the source. Our free AI visibility check walks you through the self-test in two minutes.

What should dentists avoid when chasing AI visibility?

  • Fake or incentivized reviews. They break Google's policy and the FTC's rule on consumer reviews, and they can be removed in bulk.
  • Mass-produced AI pages for every city and treatment combination. Thin, repetitive pages tend to hurt trust rather than build it.
  • Keyword-stuffed business names on your Business Profile, which break Google's guidelines.
  • Claims you cannot support, such as "best" or "number one", which assistants may repeat and patients may question.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my dental practice?
Make the facts about your practice complete and consistent across your Business Profile, major listings and website, keep a steady flow of genuine reviews, and earn mentions on other trustworthy sites. ChatGPT answers local questions by searching the web, so those sources are what it reads.
Is there special schema for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there is no special schema.org structured data and no additional requirement to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data you use should match the visible page.
Do dentists need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google's AI features. It is an optional, low-cost file some sites publish; a clear facts page on your website is more useful to patients and systems alike.
How often should I check what AI assistants say about my practice?
Monthly. Ask the main assistants the questions your patients ask and fix any wrong information at its source.
Do reviews affect AI recommendations for dentists?
In our testing, practices with a steady flow of genuine reviews are named far more often. Reviews are also a confirmed factor in Google's local ranking.
