Short answer: most single-location dental practices pay an agency $1,000 to $3,000 a month to manage marketing, plus $2,000 to $5,000 a month in ad spend. At 2026 benchmark rates, $3,000 a month on Google Ads buys about 375 clicks and 40 leads. What a new patient finally costs depends on how many of those leads your front desk books.
- Dental search ads cost a median $8.00 per click and $72.97 per lead in 2026, among the most expensive categories on Google.
- Dental SEO retainers usually run $750 to $5,000 a month, with most practices landing between $1,000 and $2,500.
- A lead is not a patient. In one February 2026 study of 26 dental offices, 38% of calls went unanswered and only 25% of new-patient calls booked.
- Judge any budget by cost per booked patient, not cost per click or per lead. The calculator below shows the gap.
How much does a dental marketing agency charge per month?
Agency pricing is quoted per service. Ask for each line separately so you can see what you are paying for and compare quotes fairly.
| Service | Typical monthly cost | What drives the price |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads management | $500 flat to about 15% of ad spend | Number of campaigns and locations, call tracking, reporting depth |
| Dental SEO | $750 to $5,000 (most pay $1,000 to $2,500) | Market competition, number of locations, content and link building |
| Local SEO per location | $500 to $1,500 | Google Business Profile work, citations, reviews |
| Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads management | In our experience, priced like Google Ads management | Creative production, number of offers tested |
| Website build | One-off; a Chicago agency build often runs $10,000 to $45,000+ | Custom design vs template, page count, who owns the site afterwards |
Watch the ownership terms as closely as the price. Some agencies rent you a template website or run ads in an account they own. If you leave, you may lose the site, the ad history or both. We cover what to check in our 12-point agency audit.
How much should a dental practice spend on Google Ads?
Start from the benchmarks, then from the number of new patients you need. WordStream by LocaliQ's 2026 report, built from more than 13,000 US search campaigns run between April 2025 and March 2026, puts dentists among the three most expensive categories per click.
We recommend practices start at $3,000 a month or more on Google Ads and $1,500 a month or more on Meta. Below that, a campaign gets too few conversions each month for Google's bidding to learn what a good lead looks like, and results swing week to week.
Specialty searches cost more per click but often convert better. Implant, Invisalign and emergency terms deserve their own campaigns and landing pages so their costs do not hide inside a blended average.
What does a new dental patient actually cost?
Cost per lead is where most reports stop, and where most of the money leaks. Between a lead and a seated patient sit two steps your agency does not control: someone has to answer the phone, and they have to book the caller.
Peerlogic tracked 4,280 inbound calls across a 26-office dental group in February 2026. 38% of calls went unanswered, and only 25% of new-patient calls ended in a booked appointment, against 56% for existing patients. Your numbers may be better, but you will not know until you measure them.
Dental marketing cost calculator
Move the sliders to match your practice. The defaults use 2026 median click costs and the call-handling rates from the Peerlogic study.
First-year return on total spend: –. Estimates only; real results depend on your market, offer and front desk. The 35% booking default assumes answered calls book more often than the 25% all-call average.
Try raising "Calls answered" from 62% to 90%. Booked patients rise by almost half and cost per patient falls by a third, without a dollar more in ad spend. That is why the front desk is part of any honest marketing budget.
A three-location Columbus practice produced 317 patient leads at $19.74 each in its first ten weeks (daily DENTAL & bracesbar case study). A Spring, Texas practice cut its cost per patient enquiry from $83.59 to $10.39 after we rebuilt its account around what patients search for (The Smile Designer case study). Both beat the $72.97 median because the accounts were rebuilt around high-intent searches and tracked real enquiries, not page views.
What is a reasonable total marketing budget for a dental practice?
Most guidance lands between 3% and 8% of collections, with growth-stage practices at the top of that range. For a single-location practice collecting $80,000 to $120,000 a month, that works out to roughly $2,400 to $11,000 a month across all marketing.
A better way to set it is to work backwards from patients:
- Decide how many new patients you need each month.Include the ones you lose to moves and insurance changes, not just growth.
- Estimate your cost per booked patient.Use your own tracked numbers, or the calculator above until you have them.
- Multiply, then add management.25 patients at $250 each is $6,250 a month, plus agency fees.
- Check it against first-year patient value. If a new patient is worth $1,000 in year one, a $250 acquisition cost pays back four times before recall visits.
Should you pay setup fees or sign a 12-month contract?
A long contract protects the agency, not you. A good agency should be able to show progress within the first 60 to 90 days, because ad results show quickly even when SEO takes longer. Month-to-month terms keep the agency earning your business every month. We explain how our own terms work on the month-to-month dental marketing page.
If a quote includes a setup fee, ask what it buys: account builds, tracking setup and landing pages are real one-off work. A fee for "onboarding" with no deliverables is not.
How do you know if you are overpaying for dental marketing?
- Reports show clicks, impressions and "leads", but never booked patients.
- Invoices bundle ad spend and agency fees into one number.
- You do not have admin access to your own Google Ads account.
- Your cost per lead is well above $73 on search with no explanation, such as a high-cost specialty.
- You are locked into 12 months with no performance review point.
